The colonnade around it is still full of numerous showrooms, mithai shops, hair-cutting salons and even chai stalls. In fact, the structure has a close resemblance to Connaught Place, which was created later on. Certain shops in the colonnade have turned into history, such is the importance of this location. 

Developed by the Britishers, this area used to house numerous Bengalis and families that migrated from Sindh after the partition of the country. Although the history attached to the market makes it a part-museum, the new development approved by the NDMC will now actually convert this ancient space into a place where people can take a peek into the history and culture of the city. 

The forthcoming museum is said to value all the important aspects of the market and its early designs, such as using the Rosetta Stone, with which the market was initially built. The creation of a museum will convert this small market into a symbol that transcends time and space.
